The proposals are alternatives to what many consider a more pragmatic, but politically impossible solution to the penny problem: getting rid of the penny altogether.
“People still want pennies, which is why we’re still making them,” Moy said.
I’m not so sure the savings stated by the sponsor of the bill necessarily outweigh the risks of making all coins out of crap metals. The move doesn’t address the real issues behind what is going on with the metals, and that’s continuous war.
